John ,

I first ran for office because I didn’t see enough leaders prioritizing the issues that impacted my community the most — the crushing costs of health care and housing, the corporate assault on workers and their families, the worsening climate crisis, and the systemic racism that compounds these and other challenges.

I know these experiences because I’ve lived them. I grew up poor, Black, and gay in Section 8 housing and on food stamps, raised by a young, single mom. I never imagined that one day someone like me could run for public office, let alone hold public office.

That’s why during my first term in Congress, I have fought hard to not only bring bold solutions to these problems into the mainstream conversation, but to make them a reality through legislation and movement-building.

You may have heard by now about my decision to run in NY-10, an open seat in a newly created district covering lower Manhattan and parts of Brooklyn.

I love this district. I have not only worked in it, but it is the district that taught me how to live an authentic life as my full self. When I was closeted, I found refuge in the gay bars of the West Village, finally in a place that felt accepting to me. And I will never forget attending my first Pride.

In NY-10, I found myself.

NY-10 is the birthplace of the LGBTQ+ rights movement. Since long before the Stonewall Uprising, queer people of color have sought refuge within its borders. Yet, this community has never sent an LGBTQ+ person to represent it in Congress. When I’m elected, I’ll be the first.

To do so, we have to win our tough primary on August 23 and prepare for the fight ahead.

You may have heard that former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced he wants to take a crack at yet another run for office by competing in NY-10.

I’ll always be honest with you, John. Bill de Blasio will pose a serious challenge to my race for re-election this year. We know he’ll have the backing of the 1% and corporations — we need to ensure we can match that with a wave of grassroots support from the people.

De Blasio will, undoubtedly, have the resources to launch bad-faith attack ads against me and our progressive movement, and our campaign needs to run on all cylinders to fight back and spread our bold, inspiring message.

This grassroots movement has consistently spoken truth to power and supported our words with bold action — in Congress and throughout our community — and we can’t let up now.

If you’re all in for making our bold ideas a reality, will you chip in today so we can win this primary and help build on the progressive grassroots momentum we’re seeing across New York? [[link removed]]
