As I am sure all of you are, I am horrified and infuriated by Tuesday's mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas.

My heart breaks for the 19 young children and two teachers who were killed, and for the families whose pain and grief is unimaginable.

Like Sandy Hook, like Parkland, and like so many others, a community will never be the same again.

We often hear after tragedies like these that now is not the time to politicize gun violence, or that we must wait for a more convenient season to take action on this uniquely-American epidemic.

I reject that notion, and say that the only thing to do in the wake of mass shootings like Tuesday's is anything and everything we can to prevent them from happening again.

The NRA and the Republican Party have allowed us to become the only nation in the world where massacres like these happen regularly in our schools, grocery stores, places of worship, malls, movie theaters, parks, or anywhere else.

And after yet another tragedy, they offer nothing beyond thoughts and prayers. That is not enough — we must act.

We have a moral obligation and a duty, with or without them, to abolish the filibuster and move urgently to pass comprehensive gun safety legislation that will save lives.

Democrats are in control of the Senate, the House, and the presidency. We have no excuse not to get this done. Enough is enough.

I promise you today that I will do everything in my power to make that happen.

I know days like these are difficult. I’m proud to stand with you in this fight.

In solidarity,

Ed Markey
