John, thanks for opening this email. I want to give you an important update on the redistricting process here in New York. You may have heard some news about our re-election campaign, and I want you to hear directly from me about my decision.

The final congressional map released last night is the result of partisan politics – drawn by an out-of-state, Republican court appointee who has shown utter disregard for cultural, social, and economic communities of interest. Ultimately, it was designed to reduce the number of New York Democrats in Congress.

To help secure our Democratic House majority, I have decided to avoid a brutal primary with another sitting member of Congress and run for another term in Congress in NY-10, an open seat in a newly created district.

NY-10 is the birthplace of the LGBTQ+ rights movement. Since long before the Stonewall Uprising, queer people of color have sought refuge within its borders.

I’m excited to make my case for why I’m the right person to lead this district forward and to continue my work in Congress to save our democracy from the threats of the far right.

In my first term, I have worked hard to deliver real results for New York State. I helped pass the American Rescue Plan and critical investments in infrastructure for New Yorkers. I have also worked to increase affordable housing and have led the fight to protect the rights of women and LGBTQ+ individuals. With our democracy under threat from the far right, I co-authored and helped the House pass the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act and introduced the Judiciary Act to expand the Supreme Court.

I look forward to being a champion for NY-10 in Congress.

I’ll be honest — this new path is going to be difficult, but not impossible. A new congressional map means new challenges that are going to require us to fight harder to reach voters and overcome negative attacks from opponents.

But it also means a new opportunity to continue leading as a progressive champion in Congress. And now that it’s official, we can finally start the process of planning our organizing efforts in NY-10 and start engaging new supporters and volunteers.

The work ahead is going to be tough — but we know it will be rewarding. And we’ll need your help to get it done: can you pitch in today to support our campaign? [[link removed]]

Thank you again for hearing me out today. I couldn’t be more grateful for your support, which has helped us build a strong grassroots campaign dedicated to delivering big, progressive, and transformational change to our communities — together.

This may be a new district for us, but I will always fight for what matters: a living wage, Medicare for All, a livable planet, racial and LGBTQ+ justice, and so much more.

And with your help, I’ll continue to do just that.

Onward,
Mondaire
