Hi John,
Today is my 35th birthday, and I’m reaching out to ask for your support in contributing to my re-election campaign.
I’m facing a lot of uncertainty these days regarding my election, but I’m used to uncertainty. Growing up poor wasn’t easy. I watched as my mom worked multiple jobs just to put food on the table and make sure I had as great a childhood as I could under the circumstances. She did a hell of a job doing so. When child care was too expensive, I tagged along with my grandma as she cleaned homes, and I learned the meaning of the phrase “it takes a village.” Yet, like so many people from all parts of New York and throughout the country, we still needed assistance from the government to survive.
I’m where I am today because my mom and grandma taught me to dream big and create my own destiny – in spite of the odds and the naysayers. It’s why I fought and worked to make my way to Stanford, then served in the Obama Administration and made it to Harvard Law. When people said a guy who didn’t come from money and wasn’t part of the establishment could never win a House primary over wealthy and well-known opponents, I made history as the first openly gay, Black member of Congress.
Earlier today, my cousin texted me this photo. I had never seen it before. It’s a photo of me at a time when I desperately wanted to change the world – to make it fair for kids like me – but had no idea I could.

As I reflect on my 35 years on Earth, I think of the boy in that picture and how far I have come with your help. My experiences as a child shaped me into who I am today, but I know that others have not been so lucky to beat the unfair odds against them.
That’s why I fight every single day to make sure other children, regardless of the circumstances of their birth, can dream big and achieve their dreams.
The little boy in that photo would be proud of the work we accomplished this term. Cutting child poverty in half and keeping schools and small businesses open through the American Rescue Plan . Playing a lead role in passing the largest investment in infrastructure in our nation’s history, which will create millions of good-paying jobs over the next decade. Then co-authoring the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act to save our democracy from the threats of the far-right.
I will never stop fighting for working people in Congress, regardless of the district.
Now, I need your help to continue that fight. On my 35th birthday, can I count on you to make a $35 contribution to my re-election campaign? [[link removed]]
