Tomorrow is the Pennsylvania primary, which means our endorsed candidate John Fetterman will face off against his competitors to determine who will go on to challenge the Republican candidate for Pennsylvania’s open Senate seat in November.

In a minute, we’re going to remind you why John is the BEST candidate to defeat the GQP in the general election – but first, let us introduce you to his potential competition, so you fully understand the stakes.

The three frontrunning Republicans in tomorrow’s primary are Trump-endorsee and TV huckster Dr. Mehmet Oz, former hedge-fund CEO Dave McCormick, and Kathy Barnette – an ultra-MAGA underdog who has been campaigning in tandem with Christian-nationalist gubernatorial candidate Doug Mastriano and recently received a $12 million cash infusion from the Club For Growth.

Slate’s Jim Newell summed them up better than we can, so we’ll quote him here (emphases ours):

“Dr. Mehmet Oz, a surgeon and TV show host who has long lived in a New Jersey mansion the size of a midtier moon of Jupiter, crashed at his Pennsylvania in-laws’ place, announced that he had long been a Pennsylvanian, and declared his candidacy. Perhaps he could get by on celebrity.

Another salt-of-the-earth, workaday Pennsylvanian, Dave McCormick—CEO of Connecticut-based Bridgewater Associates, the world’s largest hedge fund—joined the race in the beginning of the year. Perhaps he could pull a Glenn Youngkin, another finance executive who swooped into the Virginia governor’s race relatively late, buried the primary field in money, and successfully rode a sweater-vest-dad vibe to general election victory in a swing state.

It may not surprise you to learn that Barnette is a big stolen-election believer, and not just the 2020 presidential election. She lost her own congressional race in 2020 to Rep. Madeleine Dean by 19 points, and then literally knocked on door after door to determine whether it was stolen. She did not concede.

She also has a fascinating Twitter history. One 2016 tweet reads, ‘Just confronted a Muslim today…’ and links to a since-deleted Facebook video. I both want to know what was on that video and really don’t want to know what was on that video.”

(NOTE: Barnette’s Islamophobic Twitter history goes way beyond that: In 2014, she tweeted, “If you love freedom, Islam must NOT be allowed to thrive under any condition.” In 2015, she tweeted, “Pedophilia is a Cornerstone of Islam.” In 2016, she tweeted, “Obama is aMuslim. Doing Muslim like THINGS! [sic]”)

So, should John win the primary tomorrow (and we believe he will!), his Republican opponent will be one of the following:

1) A filthy-rich, fraudulent TV huckster/scammer in the style of Donald Trump, who carries Trump’s endorsement;

2) An even filthier-rich hedge-fund guy in the style of Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin who has cranked up his rhetoric to full-on “America First” Trumpism during his campaign; or

3) A QAnon-aligned ultra-MAGA true believer, who participated in the January 6 insurrection, is openly Islamophobic and homophobic, and who appears to have exaggerated or made up parts of her dramatic backstory.

I think we can all agree that NONE of these people belong anywhere near the U.S. Senate!

John Fetterman, on the other hand, is EXACTLY the sort of candidate we would love to see serving the American people as a U.S. Senator.

John Fetterman is the REAL DEAL – a champion for working-class Americans who isn’t afraid to speak truth to power and do whatever it takes to effect meaningful change … even when that means challenging folks in his own party to do better.
