Hi John,
My name is Brian Bengs, I live in Aberdeen, South Dakota. I'm running to unseat John Thune, the #2 Republican in the Senate. I’m proud to have been endorsed this week by No Dem Left Behind.
I grew up in a town of 600 people in rural Iowa. My mother was a part-time waitress and my father was a machinist at a local factory. I learned hard work because of them. I spent my teenage years delivering newspapers every morning and detasseling corn in the summers.
I'm a 26-year veteran of the Navy and Air Force, and spent 19 of those 26 years as an attorney in the Air Force JAG Corps. Early in my career, I was a military public defender. I then transitioned to academia and taught students at the Air Force Academy, at the NATO School in Germany, and at Northern State University about counterterrorism, homeland security, cyber warfare, and much more. It's been my life's work to ensure justice.
When I saw insurrectionists storm our Capitol on January 6th, 2021, I knew I had to do something.
Like many Americans, I switched my party affiliation from Independent to Democrat because Democrats were the ones taking a stand for Democracy. When no one stepped up to run against Sen. John Thune, I decided that I would take him on myself.
With last week’s news of the Supreme Court’s upcoming decision to reverse Roe v. Wade , and Sen. Thune enthusiastically voting to make it happen, I’m more certain than ever that I’m doing the right thing.
Every individual should have the right to make informed decisions regarding their health without undue interference from the government. Republican leadership, including Sen. Thune, were covertly orchestrating this outcome for decades. And the worst part is, if the leaked draft becomes the final opinion, not only will Roe v. Wade be overturned, but the door will be opened to the revocation of other rights Americans currently rely upon, too.
Make no mistake – I’m 100% committed to winning this election and unseating John Thune.
But as I’m learning, it's not easy being a Democrat in South Dakota. I'd describe myself as many things: a veteran, a professor, an attorney, a husband, and a father. But I'm not a politician.
Because my opponent hasn’t had significant funds raised against him since 2004 and South Dakota has been left out of the conversation for far too long, I know that the Democratic party is able to be revitalized. Voters just like me are waiting for a candidate to have faith in.
This year is a unique opportunity for South Dakotan voters. We have the chance to run one of the most cost-effective races in the country. My team tells me that it only takes $20 per voter to win here in South Dakota. In 2018, we came incredibly close to taking back the Governor’s mansion. This year, I know we can take back John Thune’s Senate seat.
In order for me to run the race it will take to be competitive against my opponent (who has $15 million cash on hand!) and to build back the Democratic party here in South Dakota, I need to raise money now more than ever.
