Yesterday afternoon, the Medicare for All Act of 2022 was introduced in the United States Senate, a major component of our fight to finally establish a transformative, just, and much-needed single-payer health care system in this country.

Back in 2017, I was proud to be an original co-sponsor of Senator Bernie Sanders’ Medicare for All Act.

The years since, during which a devastating pandemic has killed nearly 1 million people in this country alone and caused economic disaster for many millions more, have only further exposed what we already know:

We need Medicare for All, and we need it now.

As we continue our work to strengthen the Affordable Care Act, protect the right to abortion, recover from the pandemic, and lower the obscene cost of prescription drugs, we must also set our sights toward achieving our ultimate goal of universal health care coverage for everyone in this country.

Here are a few facts for you:

Despite paying substantially more for health care than any other major country on earth, the United States ranks 54th in the world in life expectancy.

Despite paying substantially more for health care than any other major country on earth, the United States ranks dead-last among high-income countries in access to care, administrative efficiency, health equity, and health care outcomes.

Because we pay substantially more for health care than any other major country on earth, nearly two-thirds of bankruptcies are due to medical costs and the overwhelming burden of debt that it brings.

Millions of people have lost their employer-sponsored health insurance coverage as a result of the pandemic and subsequent economic crisis.

And while we have made tremendous progress fighting for and defending the Affordable Care Act, nearly 32 million people in this country remain uninsured, and millions more struggle to pay for the health care that they have or the prescription drugs that they need.

All the while, the health insurance companies and pharmaceutical industry continue to post record profits of billions of dollars, year after year.

The fact of the matter is that in the United States, we do not have a functioning health care system. We have a sick care system — one intentionally designed to maximize profits, shareholder value, and CEO bonuses, rather than take care of people.

In the richest country in the world, it’s an injustice that millions of people lack basic health care, and too many Americans live on the cusp of financial collapse if they face unforeseen medical emergencies or devastating diagnoses, or are forced to forego critical treatment altogether.

The state of this system is an economic and moral disgrace, and it is one that must be changed.

We must continue our fight, pass Medicare for All, and guarantee health care as a human right for every single person in our country.

But the truth is that none of us can do it alone.

In order for that to happen, our nationwide progressive movement needs to stand united on this issue — and with the Medicare for All Act of 2022 just introduced, I need you with me. That’s why I am asking:
