Dear Friend –

For over a year, our campaign has been crisscrossing the state, building a coalition of folks who are ready to shake up politics as usual and put power back into the hands of South Carolinians. Despite our hard work, the reality our campaign faces is the same reality that countless Black women running for office face: we’ve got to work twice as hard to get half as far. 

That’s why I was incredibly excited to see an article that finally acknowledged what so many people across South Carolina recognize: We’re building a campaign that’s ready to withstand anything the GOP machine may throw our way, and our people-powered movement cannot be underestimated. 

South Carolina hasn’t had a Democrat in the Governor’s Office in nearly two decades – and has NEVER elected a Black woman Governor. I’m ready to make history because now, more than ever, these times call for real, meaningful change.

Senator Mia McLeod was the first black woman elected to represent her Senate district. She is a working mom, small business owner, and seventh-generation South Carolinian from Bennettsville, South Carolina. She is a former State Representative, current State Senator representing District 22, and is running as a Democratic candidate for Governor.
