Friend,

Check out these updates about what Mayor LaToya Cantrell's administration has been up to recently, and other important news.

** Defending Roe v. Wade at the Local Level
------------------------------------------------------------
Mayor LaToya Cantrell joined over 70 other women mayors from across the nation in penning an open letter regarding the leaked U.S. Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. The draft opinion seeks to strip women of their freedom.

"We're appalled that the Supreme Court has apparently had at least one vote that would overturn Roe v. Wade," said Mayor Cantrell.

** NOPD Academy Class 194
------------------------------------------------------------
The City of New Orleans welcomed it's 194th class of New Orleans Police Department officers on May 6th.

This is the 13th class of officers to graduate under Mayor Cantrell's administration, and the 14th class is currently in training and will graduate soon.

** Signed. Sealed. Delivered.
------------------------------------------------------------
Mayor LaToya Cantrell recently signed a few ordinances that will set up our city for generations of success.

The first was a cooperative endeavor agreement with the state for the Richard Lee Playground in the Lower Ninth Ward. The CEA allows planning and construction to begin!

The second was an appropriations ordinance to allocate $15 million from the American Rescue Plan Act for the building and development of a new Sewerage and Water Board substation with power provided by Entergy.

We commend the City Council and Mayor Cantrell on tackling these two critical issues!

** Office of Gun Violence Prevention in Action
------------------------------------------------------------
Following the horrific mass shooting at Balcony Bar, Mayor Cantrell's Office of Gun Violence Prevention was out canvassing the area to inform businesses about trauma support resources. The office also made hospital visits and followed up with victims and their families.

The NOPD was able to make arrests in less than 24 hours.

** New Orleans Guaranteed Income Program
------------------------------------------------------------
Mayor LaToya Cantrell's Office of Youth & Families recently announced the launch of the New Orleans Guaranteed Income Program through a $500,000 grant from Mayors for a Guaranteed Income.

The program will serve 125 young people between the ages of 16-24 who are disconnected from work and school. Participants will receive a monthly payment of $350 for the next 10 months. Thank you to the Office of Youth & Families for making sure our children have a pathway to financial freedom.
