Last year was labeled as “the worst year in recent history” for LGBTQ legislative attacks as 191 anti-LGBTQ bills were introduced. This year, 2022 has almost DOUBLED that amount with over 300 anti-LGBTQ bills currently pending across state legislatures. And it’s only May.

It is utterly devastating — and worrisome — that we are still fighting for basic human rights and dignity in this country.

Unfriendly Reminder: There is currently NO federal law that explicitly protects LGBTQ+ people from discrimination.

But there is a major step forward that we can take immediately to help rectify these systematic attacks against LGBTQ+ people:

The Equality Act would prohibit discrimination based on sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity in areas including public accommodations and facilities, education, federal funding, employment, housing, credit, the judicial system, and more. But the Senate has not passed it.

Passing this essential anti-discrimination legislation at the federal level would provide a necessary safeguard from these direct, discriminatory attacks at the state level and help solidify basic, constitutionally protected freedoms of LGBTQ+ people.

As a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community, I refuse to sit by quietly as conservatives work to strip away our inalienable right to EXIST.
