Asian Pacific American Heritage Month celebrates the contributions of Americans with ties to the Asian continent and the Pacific islands of Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia.

May was chosen to commemorate Asian American Pacific Islanders (AAPI) heritage because of two key dates. May 7, 1843 marks the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants to the United States. May 10, 1869 (Golden Spike Day) recognizes the completion of the first transcontinental railroad in the U.S. made possible by Chinese workers. Read more info in this NPR article. This year's theme is Advancing Leaders Through Collaboration

The Federal Asian Pacific American Council (FAPAC) — a nonprofit that supports the interests of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders in the federal and D.C. governments — selected the theme. "When you have diversity at the leadership table, the magnitude of what you can accomplish is enormous," said Fahmida Chhipa, FAPAC's vice president.

Generations of Asian and Pacific Islanders have enriched America's history and are key to our future success!
