Like so many of you, I’m spending today thinking about my mother – and celebrating the woman who gave me life and loves me more than sometimes seems humanly possible.

I owe my mom everything. From an early age, she taught me to dream big and fight hard.

Growing up in the Village of Spring Valley, my mother taught me that I could be anything I wanted. It was a radical idea. At the time, my mom was working multiple jobs just to make ends meet, and our family relied on section 8 housing and food stamps to get by.

I took her words to heart and dreamed big. I earned degrees from Stanford University and Harvard Law School. I worked in President Obama’s administration at the Department of Justice, and served on the NAACP’s National Board of Directors and on the board of the New York Civil Liberties Union.

And now, I spend every day in Congress fighting hard in her honor. Whether it’s equal pay for equal work, paid family leave, universal child care, or protecting the right of women to make their own health care decisions, I carry my mom – and the sacrifices she made – with me in everything I do.

So this week, especially, I pray that we learn to appreciate and advocate for women on more than just Mother’s Day. I pray that we fight for the policies that will finally close the gender pay gap, allow all women economic independence, and protect women’s fundamental rights.

Finally, I pray that you and your loved ones have a very happy Mother’s Day.
