Friend, I'm Megan Matson, a
longtime supporter of The Lincoln Project like you. I've also joined
the Board of Directors because I believe in our shared cause. In the
future, you can expect to hear more from me about our organizing work
– I've been helping fine-tune what we're doing internally and bringing
our volunteer capacity to bear where it is needed most as a volunteer
with The Union.
I love America – our country – and
our Constitutional freedoms. You have heard a lot about Roe v. Wade
this week. What you may not know is that it delivered to “we the
people'' in a clear voice, the individual and fundamental right to
privacy – our personal freedom to live, love, marry and procreate
without government interference. Every single one of us.
In a series of Supreme Court Cases,
the Court has long recognized that a right of personal privacy, or a
guarantee of certain areas or zones of privacy, does exist under the
Constitution’s 9th and 14th Amendments.
From Washington, DC we have news
that the Supreme Court may be taking all of our rights back almost
half a century, and signaling to state politicians that our homes are
open range for their knocks at the door and their prying
eyes.
I don’t think privacy is just a
women's issue – it’s an American issue. Our freedom from the overreach
of a blundering state must be constantly tended. But now these
maligned forces of heavy government control are in ascension. Now the
women, the men, and the families of America will be subordinated in
their most private affairs to the politicians deciding what goes on
inside their homes, their bodies, their lives.
This move toward big government
intrusion didn’t start here, and won’t end here. From Don’t Say Gay
bills to snitch laws and banned history books, an attack on the
individual rights and freedoms of any of us is an attack on all of us.
There are forces amassing to move against settled individual
Constitutional freedoms to live, speak, think, marry and procreate
without seeking permission from us or our elected representatives. At
the same time, those very politicians keep moving against the voting
rights that would make them answer for these attacks. Now is the time
– and we are the people – to stop the madness and end the assault on
the Constitution. That is why I joined the Board of The Lincoln
Project and why I am writing to you to get involved and stay involved
until Election Day.
The Lincoln Project is not a policy
organization. We are a “democracy organization” with clarity of
purpose and great determination to preserve, protect and defend
American Constitutional Democracy against its enemies. The enemies of
freedom and privacy are organized, well-funded and heavily engaged. We
must not take anything for granted when defending our
liberties.
The fight for democracy in 2022,
2024, and beyond is this fight. I’m glad you’re with us in
it.
