Dear friend,

It is one thing to know that the worst is coming, and quite another to see a tweet completely reversing your rights in black-and-white. As an attorney, I fully understand that this is a draft decision, subject to change in language and scope, or even a change in votes. But to read “Roe was egregiously wrong from the start” and “Roe and Casey must be overruled” felt like a punch in the gut.

I am mad. I am devastated. I am scared. I am a mix of so many emotions that I can’t quite describe.

I am thinking about the women who have shared their own stories with me about why they chose to have an abortion.

I am thinking about all the people who will die because they cannot make the decision to receive a necessary abortion in consultation with their medical provider, or those who will seek an unsafe abortion because it’s their only option in a crisis.

I have made a personal decision that I do not want to give birth to children of my own, and I worry about what happens if my IUD fails.

I am supposed to be in a position to help protect all Pennsylvanians, and to preserve their right to make their own choices for their health and their lives. I have already voted no on a number of bills that would restrict the right to an abortion. I sponsor legislation that would expand access to reproductive and maternal healthcare. But as a member of the minority party, I know that I cannot stop Republicans from destroying our rights.

We need to elect more unabashedly pro-choice candidates. We need to elect Josh Shapiro as Governor. If we don’t, we will lose the right to have a safe abortion in Pennsylvania and women will die.

We need you — to knock on doors, make phone calls, organize your friends and neighbors.
