The average cost of attendance at any 4-year institution is around
$35,331 - take that in for a moment. At the end of that 4 years, that is
$141,324 that we are expecting 18, 19, 21, and 22-year-old students to pay to achieve a higher education. This is unacceptable.
How can we expect young adults to afford this without taking out thousands of dollars in loans? Well, the answer is: they can’t. And now we have an overwhelming student loan crisis that we cannot seem to do anything about. To make things worse, the cost of higher education continues to rise— there is evidently no ceiling to what universities will charge for tuition.
Every single person should have the right and opportunity to affordable, quality education in this country. Is this too much to ask for? We should be giving our students the education they deserve to succeed after school, yet we are pounding them with debt leaving them with additional challenges. Now, instead of preparing for their future and building a steady income, they are living paycheck to paycheck trying to pay back their loans.
We have seen President Biden push back the federal student loan date twice now— that’s not good enough. We need more than that. We need to push for canceling federal student loans. Simply pushing back the date is still leaving students in crippling debt. Canceling $10,000 is not enough. We need sweeping reform.
We need to create a path that invests in our students rather than bankrupts them.
