John —

Last night, Politico broke the story that the Supreme Court has voted down Roe v. Wade , gutting abortion rights.

I won’t lie to you, I’m angry as hell. This is a horrific attack on women — especially working class women of color — and a devastating reminder that our bodies aren’t our own in a country dominated by conservative men.

But let me be clear — this decision isn’t final yet, and if Roe is overturned, abortion should remain legal in New Jersey. So right now, our focus needs to be on protecting abortion access, supporting providers of reproductive healthcare, and lending our support to communities across the country where the GOP is set to ban abortion fully the moment Roe is overturned.

I’ve spent years standing up for abortion rights, fighting to secure safe, accessible reproductive care for women of color, and speaking out when abortion rights have come under attack. And that will never change. So today, I’m asking you to stand with me and commit to the fight for abortion rights — because the stakes just got so much higher.

With Roe gone, we’re going to see attacks on abortion rights like we haven’t seen in over 50 years. And Rep. Donald Payne Jr. couldn’t even be bothered to show up to the New Jersey Women’s March whose theme was protecting abortion rights.

If it wasn’t clear before, it’s clear now — we can’t afford to have do-nothing Democrats like Payne Jr. in Congress, refusing to take a stand and fight for abortion rights.

If he won’t even protect abortion rights in his own district, he can’t be trusted to do what needs to be done once Roe is overturned and the fight for abortion rights comes down to Congress and state legislators.

There’s no way around it: women — and working class women of color in particular — are going to die if this decision comes to pass. And a representative who doesn’t take that seriously isn’t just negligent, but dangerous.

Our primary is just over one month away, and this is our chance to replace Rep. Payne Jr. and vote for the proud, unapologetic progressive leadership that we need to protect abortion rights and fight for what’s right.

Thank you for standing with me.

— Imani
