Hello there,
Congress let VAWA lapse almost a year ago now, and it’s not clear yet how much damage has been caused by the lack of federal funding for domestic abuse programs across the country -- but Republicans allegedly trying to fix the problem have somehow found a way to make things worse.
Senate Republicans just released their version of the VAWA reauthorization act, and it’s about as shitty as you’d expect. The House passed a version that would take guns out of the hands of those convicted of misdemeanor stalking offenses and those with temporary restraining orders in place against them, which seems like sense, but not to the NRA, which relies so heavily on the lucrative controlling abusive spouse market.
The GOP version also walks back any progress on recognizing domestic violence in the LGBTQ+ community AND makes it harder for Native victims of domestic violence to seek justice in tribal courts.
Your support is critical to Democrats taking back the Senate in 2020.
Thank you,
