Pictured above is Maryam, a 14-year-old living in southwestern Yemen. Maryam and her family were forced to flee because of the war, and now she and ten members of her family live together in a two-room home partitioned by torn tents and old curtains.

"[When I was] leaving my house, I felt my soul leave the place. When we were leaving, my father asked me to get into the car, and I was looking back at the house. I told my father, 'I don't want to leave,' but I was afraid of war and bullets. After I left, I wondered how I would meet with my friends and neighbors again."

Although times are incredibly tough for the family, Maryam refuses to lose hope. She is especially excited to celebrate Ramadan.
"[Ramadan] is a blessed month with the best days," she says. "I love fasting the most during Ramadan. When I am fasting, God bestows me with strength."

Less than half of Yemen's health centers are still functioning, and more than half the population is going hungry.

And now, the reverberating impacts of the conflict in Ukraine — which supplies wheat, fuel and more to Yemen — are making things even worse. The number of people facing famine-like levels of hunger is expected to increase five-fold by the end of the year.
