Well, it's official: Elon Musk just bought Twitter. Once again, money seems to “trump” all (pun intended), and now we and other progressive groups must prepare for the inevitable – the return of Donald Trump to social media. 

Honestly, it wouldn’t surprise us to later learn that Trump himself was behind this whole thing. Why did Musk all of a sudden decide to buy Twitter, anyway? Isn't he busy enough trying to send people to Mars?

We’ll have time to look into all that later, but for now, this is what we need to be prepared for: Trump will almost certainly get his infamous Twitter account restored, and that will give him the megaphone he needs to pick where right he left off on January 6th, 2021. 

Some folks may take this news in passing, but for others it will yield real-life consequences. 

Trump uses his platform to take aim at the most vulnerable among us. The hateful comments Trump spewed on Twitter in the past did lasting damage to a lot of marginalized groups and people, and unfortunately, they are about to be multiplied and amplified once more. 

This is going to fire Trump’s alt-right base up and bring them flooding back to Twitter from the fringe platforms they’ve been hiding out on ever since Trump was banned. Things are about to get REALLY ugly on social media, just in time for the midterms.

Way to go Elon, way to use your billions for good. 🙄 

All that said, though, when we write to you, we try never to just complain or share bad news. We always want to provide you with context on what we plan to do to help solve the problem. 

The first thing we are doing is organizing: No Dem Left Behind has some fantastic partners that we work with in the digital realm. DemCast, Meidas Touch, Occupy Democrats, and Democratic Coalition come to mind, just to name a few, and there are more! 

We will all be working together to debunk each and every lie Trump spews, and we will make it impossible for him to ignore the fact that he is responsible for the January 6th coup attempt that took five people’s lives and injured and traumatized hundreds more, but ultimately FAILED – just like his re-election campaign. 

Remember, Trump is an egotistical narcissist – the type of person who hates to be humiliated and called out. We’ll be working overtime to do exactly that, and we won't stop there – we’ll be using social media to recruit and mobilize an army of digital organizers and volunteers to help counteract his misinformation and grift with the TRUTH. 

One of the ways No Dem Left Behind made our strongest impact in the 2020 cycle was by using the social media wave to recruit volunteers and equip them with the resources they needed to help campaign for Team Blue. We provided phone banking opportunities and postcard writing templates, and in Georgia during the run-offs, we knocked on doors in rural parts of the state.  

The momentum that built for our movement leading up to 2020 was infectious, and we want to bring it back! We never stopped taking the Trump threat seriously, but it seems like too many others did. Maybe Trump’s return to Twitter will be a wake-up call for them.

As a party, and as a country, we were able to get 81 million people to the polls in 2020 to say “No” to facism, “No” to dictatorship, “No” to hate.  We need to put up those kinds of numbers again for the midterms to send a message to Trump that we are not backing down – that he will lose and be humiliated once again.
