Friend,

At some point in all of our lives, we all have to take care of a loved one, get care for ourselves, or both -- and we need time away from our jobs to do so. It is long past time for a national paid leave policy in this country that covers all working people.

Right now, there's a robust paid family leave plan under consideration in Congress: the Family and Medical Insurance Leave (FAMILY) Act.

The FAMILY Act would provide up to twelve weeks of paid leave at two-thirds of your typical wage for caregiving. That might be related to the birth, adoption, or foster placement of a child. It could be related to the serious illness or injury of a parent, spouse, domestic partner, or child. It could be related to your own serious health issue, or the military deployment of a parent, spouse, domestic partner, or child. For military families, it might be caring for a wounded service member.

The FAMILY Act would prohibit employers from retaliating against workers who take leave. And part-time, full-time, and gig workers would all be covered.

It would be funded through payroll deductions of less than one half of 1 percent of a worker’s wages (0.4 percent), shared by employers and employees, for an average cost of less than $2 per week; self-employed workers would also be automatically covered and would pay the full 0.4 percent.

This is bold, transformative legislation.

Texas should be a leader in ensuring that working families are supported, and I intend to co-sponsor the FAMILY Act in the House, should I be elected.

To help rally support, our team is aiming to get 5,000 citizen co-sponsors to back it with me. Can you sign your name to support the FAMILY Act?

I have told my story many times about my struggles as a teenage mother -- because it's a story that so many Americans have lived through. I relied on Medicaid, Pell Grants, and the Earned Income Tax credit to put myself through school and work while raising a child. The FAMILY Act is exactly the kind of legislation that will lift up working-class families.

This is not a moment for "compromise solutions" that still leave millions behind. The public broadly supports the FAMILY Act exactly because it is not “paid leave in name only” that makes you forego social security benefits, nor does it only apply to new parents.

It’s critical that we keep the pressure on Congress to form the political will to get this done, before corporate special interests attempt to have their say.
