Hey friends,

As one of the main writers for BTE PAC, I have to say: I want to live in a world where I don’t have to write these emails because trans individuals are given the protections they deserve — both codified in law and upheld by all communities. But unfortunately, that isn’t the case.

We are still seeing bills being introduced that strip transgender individuals’ rights to make decisions on their own bodies and witnessing levels of violence that are unspeakable. Just a few weeks ago, Ohio introduced anti-trans legislation that would prohibit specific medical coverage for LGBTQ+ youth, specifically trans or nonbinary people. Alabama went so far as to pass a bill making it a crime to undergo gender-affirmation surgery to people under 19. Why is this happening?

Our endorsed candidate for Lieutenant Governor of Nevada, Kimi Cole, has faced her own trials and tribulations as a trans woman and active leader in the LGBTQ+ community. If elected, Kimi would be the first transgender person elected to statetwide office. This matters. Like many other trans youth, Kimi was told from a young age that feeling uncomfortable in her own body would be something she would “outgrow.” This is backwards thinking, and given the dangerous legislation coming through state legislatures and recent studies on suicide rates among LGBTQ+ youth, there has never been a more important time for trans visibility.

As an ally, I encourage cisgender folks to celebrate and lift up our transgender and non-binary friends and neighbors and offer support during this difficult time in the world through a grassroots contribution to support LGBTQ+ candidates breaking historic barriers.

This should not be a matter of politics - it is a matter of human rights.
