Hey there --

John Oliver came out swinging against surveillance advertising on a recent episode of Last Week Tonight

If you missed it, he went after Big Tech’s toxic business model that allows data brokers to “operate in a sprawling, unregulated ecosystem, which can get very creepy very fast.”

As John Oliver explained, these data brokers operate as the “middlemen to surveillance capitalism” by buying your personal information and selling it to third parties. It’s what fuels those hyper-targeted ads you see online that make you wonder “how did they know to show me that?” This dark web of data collection and hyper-targeting fuels the spread of disinformation, extremism, hate, and discrimination on and offline.

Online ad tech firms hold 72 million data points on the average child by the time they reach the age of 13. It’s time we put an end to this toxic business model of surveillance advertising

Until Big Tech has real competition and is forced to change its business model of surveilling us for profit, our personal information is up for grabs. That’s why we’re leading the charge behind legislation like the Banning Surveillance Advertising Act that hits at the crux of banning Big Tech’s toxic business model of surveillance advertising.

Urge your Members of Congress to support the Banning Surveillance Advertising Act:

We cannot let Big Tech off the hook. The vicious cycle of surveillance advertising poses a threat to our privacy, public health, and democracy, but we have the chance to break it and create a safer internet for all.

Let's get to it,

Nicole

We see the irony of asking you to take action on the same platforms we’re fighting to hold accountable, but they are… well… dominant. We have to reach people where they are in order to level the playing field -- and we’re ready to bring the fight right to their own platforms.

We're a small non-profit taking on Big Tech's toxic business model of surveillance advertising. Chip in to support our work:
