Friend,
You all probably know I grew up in the Republican Party. Back then, the GOP believed that everyone deserved lower taxes. They used it to great effect in nearly every campaign. Remember "read my lips, no new taxes?" And most voters knew – many still think this – that despite all the BS they read or saw on TV, their vote for a Republican meant a vote for lower taxes. Republicans spent decades making this message ingrained with their supporters.
Now it's 2022, and along with every vestige of decency, they've somehow even thrown their great advantage on tax messaging away.
This is how far away from the Republican Party of old they have turned: Mitch McConnell and his top lieutenant, Florida Senator Rick Scott, have decided that they want to RAISE taxes on half the country. See, they believe that everyone needs to have “skin in the game.” That’s code for “paying their fair share.” Ironically, they didn’t feel that way in 2018 when they passed the largest billionaire tax cut in history.
If this working-class tax hike wasn’t enough, the Republican plan also calls for “sunsetting” all Federal laws every five years. That’s code for one thing: Messing with Social Security and Medicare. They tried this under Paul Ryan when he was Speaker of the House. Now they’ve brought it back. Let me ask you – if Social Security expired, do you believe Republicans would ever let it come back? You already know the answer.
That’s why today we need your help. We need YOU to make sure that the Republican Party – a party that believes in higher working class taxes, creating chaos and ending American democracy does not win this November. <[link removed]>
We know that there are millions of Americans who need to hear the truth – that actually, Republicans want to RAISE their taxes and get rid of their Social Security and Medicare. This is not some liberal alarmist message. This is what Rick Scott and Mitch McConnell are saying out loud. We need to use their words against them.
The question I get constantly from my former Republican colleagues who still work for whatever the GOP has become is this: Why did you start The Lincoln Project?
My answer: Look in the mirror. That's why.
Thanks for all you do,
Reed
