Dear friends,

We all know California’s housing shortage and affordability crisis are a massive challenge throughout the state. But in many cases, we still lack the data we need to ensure housing laws are having the desired effect: Allowing more affordable homes to be built in our communities.

That’s why, this year, we’re proud to sponsor three bills that will help us track our state’s housing shortage, and quantify the impact of new housing laws.

Here’s a breakdown of our sponsored data bills:

AB 2873 (Diversity in contracting)

AB 2873 will collect data from Affordable Housing builders on the contractors and construction firms they hire that are owned and operated by minorities, women, and LGBTQ+ people, with the eventual goal of prioritizing state affordable housing funds for developers who work with these firms.

AB 889 seeks to increase transparency in rental housing ownership by requiring corporate and institutional housing investors to report exactly who owns and profits from the properties they buy and rent to tenants in California.

The bill will help policymakers respond to the impacts these investors have on California’s housing market.

READ ABOUT AB 889 » AB 2531 (Measuring state housing laws):

AB 2531 is a re-do of last year’s SB 477, which passed the State Legislature in 2021 but was vetoed by the governor.

This bill will require local governments to keep track of, and make public, the data needed to evaluate the impact of state laws on local housing availability and affordability.
