"Why Was Lizelle Herrera Charged With Murder for an Alleged Abortion?"

Last week a Texas woman was charged with murder for allegedly attempting to end her pregnancy. From the sheriff who arrested her to the district attorney who dropped the charges to the anti-choice politicians who passed Texas's abortion bounty hunters law, this is proof that we need pro-choice officials in every office.

Donate to help Run for Something elect pro-choice, diverse young progressives at every level. All donations are being matched by a passionate pro-choice donor, so you can double your impact.

Hi John,

I am HORRIFIED by the news out of Texas over the last week. "Rage" doesn't even come close.

Lizelle Herrera should have been able to safely and privately terminate her pregnancy. She should be free to live her own life on her terms.

Republicans have been systematically building power over the last 40 years in order to make abortion care nearly impossible for anyone but the wealthy to obtain.

The Supreme Court is likely to overturn Roe v. Wade later this year, which will just make that reality official.

We have to fight back however and wherever we can.

Help elect pro-choice, diverse young progressives – pitch in $5 or whatever you can. And right now, a passionate pro-choice donor is MATCHING every donation, so you'll double your impact.

Listen, I know it feels bleak right now, especially if you are someone who can become pregnant. But you know I'd never ever leave you feeling hopeless. And there is hope, John.

Because you probably have seen the headlines about Oklahoma passing a near-total abortion ban and about Missouri's anti-choice super bill.

But did you hear Kentucky's Democratic governor, Andy Beshear, just vetoed an abortion ban in his state?

Or how Governor Gretchen Whitmer is suing to overturn Michigan's century-old abortion ban? And RFS alums Michigan state Representatives Laurie Pohutsky and Mallory McMorrow are pushing for ballot measures to protect abortion access?

Or how RFS alum Colorado state Senator Julie Gonzales led the charge to pass a law that codifies the right to abortion in the state (which the governor just signed) – something that is so important in one of the few states with a clinic that will perform later abortions?

Or how about RFS alum Nebraska state Senator Megan Hunt led an 8-hour filibuster against an abortion ban and WON? The ban failed to pass by just TWO votes.

This is why electing pro-choice candidates in every state, in every county, in every town, in every office matters. Because sometimes, it's as simple as two votes in a place that people will tell you to write off because it's not a presidential swing state. But for the millions of people who live there, it's protecting their right to choose if, when, and how they become pregnant.

There is hope – if we fight for it. So please, pitch in $5 or whatever you can to keep electing pro-choice, diverse young progressives. (Remember, your donation will be matched!)

Let's go,
