Climate change is here, and it’s hurting our state and our people more every day.

Gov. Roy Cooper recently ramped up his response to this mounting challenge with a new executive order that accelerates our just transition to a clean energy and clean transportation economy and puts a strong focus on justice and equity for the communities most impacted by climate change.

North Carolina is now set to be carbon-neutral economy-wide by 2050 and to have 1.25 million electric vehicles on the road by 2030.

Now it’s time to put these goals into action by joining what’s called the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI), a group of 11 (and soon 12) neighbor states who have set gradually lower caps on carbon emissions and sped up their transition to a clean energy economy.

The state Environmental Management Commission (EMC) approved a petition to add North Carolina to RGGI last year, and began the rulemaking process to make it a reality.

Now we need Gov. Cooper's strong public voice to move this process along. Gov. Cooper appointed 60% of the EMC, making him the right voice to get this done.

With a closely divided Congress and a pro-polluter General Assembly, this is our best chance to act on climate for all North Carolinians. Tell Gov. Cooper to publicly support RGGI now! »

Over the last 16 years, the RGGI states have far exceeded the rest of the country in carbon reductions, economic growth, and power bills savings. Wouldn’t you like North Carolina to join in these benefits?

• A 47% drop in carbon emissions, almost twice other states’ reduction
• A 47% GDP boost, almost a third more than other states' growth
• A nearly 6% drop in power bills, compared to an almost 9% hike in other states
• $5.7 billion in public health savings

Maybe most importantly, RGGI states have reaped $3 billion to invest in clean energy and energy efficiency for low-income communities and communities of color. They are hit first and worst by pollution and climate impacts, so we must ensure they benefit from RGGI.
