Can anything be done to prevent the next massacre of Palestinians? — Middle East Eye (11/22)
Once quiet was restored to Israel’s cities after the deadly, targeted attack in Gaza earlier this month and the missiles launched in response, Israel’s citizens quickly reverted to a normal routine. Politicians and the media resumed their nauseatingly familiar normalcy: wallowing in the eternal political swamp, the impossibility of forming the next government and incitement against the country’s Palestinian citizens. Gaza, as usual, will now disappear from the public consciousness in Israel until the next missile is launched. In the much-battered Gaza Strip, life also reverted to routine: having buried the victims of the latest massacre, among them women and children, Palestinians may now find the time to remove the new rubble, amid ever-deepening poverty, while awaiting the next massacre. And it will come - we know that it will. The mass killing of Palestinians in Gaza has increasingly become normalised.
Richard Falk: International law is clear on one point: Israel's settlements are illegal — Middle East Eye (11/21)
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo made headlines around the world this week in announcing that the US had shifted its position, and no longer viewed Israeli settlements as a violation of international law. In one of the stupider public statements of our time, Pompeo explained that “arguments about who is right and wrong as a matter of international law will not bring peace”. It is stupid, first, because there is no genuine argument about the unlawfulness of the settlements; until the US spoke out of turn, Israel was alone in defending their legality. More definitively, the role of international law is to regulate the proper behaviour of sovereign states - not to make peace by negating the law’s relevance, which truly seems a cheer for the law of the jungle.
Sanders demands dignity for Palestinians in US leadership debate — Middle East Monitor (11/21)
US Presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders received thunderous applause during a Democrat candidate debate following remarks that he would get tougher on Israel and champion Palestinian dignity if he became president. Sanders, who is one of the front-runners to take on President Donald Trump in next year’s election, voiced his support for the Palestinians in a question about Saudi Arabia. Quizzed by the moderator as to whether the candidates would take a tougher stance on Saudi Arabia and its human rights abuse, the Vermont senator suggested that human rights abuse needed to be addressed across the Middle East and not just in America’s closest ally in the Gulf. All the candidates expressed that they would get tougher on Saudi without mentioning other countries in the region. Sanders, who has condemned Washington’s close ties with Riyadh on many occasions, said that he would also be tougher on Israel.
Will Democrats let Trump and Israel get away with apartheid? — Electronic Intifada (11/20)
The Trump administration announced on Monday that the US no longer views Israeli settlements on occupied territory as a violation of international law. By formally stating what has in practice been the American position for years, the US signaled to Israel that it can proceed full speed with openly imposing perpetual apartheid on millions of Palestinians living under Israeli rule between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea. Spurred on by the US announcement, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is now pushing a bill to annex the Jordan Valley – about a quarter of the occupied West Bank on the border with Jordan. Israel has been quietly ethnically cleansing the Jordan Valley of Palestinians for years and recently acting jointly with the US in preparation for annexation. Recent history provides little doubt that the Trump administration would quickly recognize Israeli annexation of the area, just as it has already recognized Israel’s illegal annexation of Syria’s Golan Heights and Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
On ‘retaliatory strikes’ and ‘Israeli fear’ — Mondoweiss (11/20)
As Israel escalated its structural oppression of Gaza through renewed military attacks this week, the Israeli military has killed at least 34 Palestinians, and exterminated a complete family. Following traditional patterns, these actions have been rationalized and euphemized throughout Western media, which tended to center the discourse on Israel’s fears. The BBC has perfectly exemplified this phenomenon, when it labeled Israel’s attacks as “retaliatory strikes.” It further reported that 63 people in Israel “have been treated for injuries and stress symptoms,” highlighting that “[a]n elderly woman was slightly wounded by broken glass after a rocket hit a house in the southern Israeli city of Ashkelon.” Israeli paper Haaretz wrote that four Israelis were treated for anxiety.
Israel is a ‘Terrorist State’: Seven Times Bolivia and Morales Took a Stance for Palestine — Palestine Chronicle (11/14)
On November 10 Bolivian President Evo Morales, announced his resignation from office following what was described by his deputy, Álvaro García Linera, as a military coup. Morales’ 14 years in office have been seen by many as a triumph for the indigenous people of Bolivia; in fact, for indigenous peoples everywhere. Along with late Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and late Cuban President Fidel Castro, among other socialist or socialist-leaning South American leaders, Morales represented the hope of an entire generation. All of this came crashing down following the general election in the country on October 20. Morales’ opponents, who have traditionally received strong backing from Washington, accused the president’s camp of rigging the elections. Following the announcement of the results which gave Morales a 10% point lead over his rival, an orchestrated campaign was launched by the opposition to overthrow the president.

A powerful tool and critical aspect of the Palestinian culture is storytelling. Storytelling from generation to generation is what has allowed us to continue to pass on the truth even when history books say otherwise. The Palestinian story has been told through different means for generations in words to pictures to even dance.
At this year's AMP convention we want to give our youth the opportunity to capture the Palestinian truth in their own creative way.
This year we are holding a Youth Competition with four different categories: video, poetry, dabke, and essay with CASH PRIZES for the winners. This is a great way for kids to be able to not only show their creativity but also their knowledge of Palestine.
If interested or have any questions, please contact AMP Chicago Chapter Coordinator Nour Abughoush by email at [email protected] and by phone at (616)437-9095.
A more detailed breakdown of each category can be found in the flyer below. Looking forward to seeing the powerful pieces that our youth makes next month!
