On November 18, the chapter voted to endorse Janeese Lewis George for the Ward 4 council race with a 202-7-6 vote. In a press statement ([link removed]) officially announcing the endorsement, the chapter affirmed that George’s commitment to racial, economic, and environmental justice firmly align her with socialist values — and that gives us hope for the future of our city! As a participant of DC’s new public financing program, George will only accept small donations no larger than $50 and the city will match donations from DC residents five to one. You can contribute to George’s campaign ([link removed]) now and attend a canvass
([link removed]) for the candidate this Sunday at Peaches Kitchen (read on for details).

This leaves an empty seat on the committee, and we will start the special elections process as soon as possible. Is your building rent-controlled? The Rent Control Working Group is conducting a survey to identify chapter members who live in rent-controlled buildings and buildings that would become rent-controlled under its platform. Fill out the quick survey ([link removed]) and help further the working group’s efforts to expand DC’s rent control law.

“On Monday November 18, Tim Shorrock spoke to about 40 people at MDC DSA’s Socialist Night School on “The Korean Peace Process and the Legacy of US Imperialism in Asia.” Shorrock is a correspondent for The Nation and has been writing about Korean politics for decades.
News coverage of Korea tends to be about momentary elite intrigue. At Socialist Night School, Shorrock started with the Japanese taking of Korea in 1905. Shorrock noted how the US sided with collaborators in Korea, which did not go over well with the people. He talked about how, because South Korea was a dictatorship, the truth of the regime’s brutality remained obscured until many years later. He stressed that the main legacy of the Korean war was brutal devastation. The US attitude on Korea, per Shorrock, hasn’t changed since 1945–it’s purely colonial. This is highlighted by the fact that while many Koreans in the South believe that a peace treaty would improve human rights on both sides, bipartisan US policy elites tend to dismiss or ignore their wishes.
A particular interesting tidbit from Shorrock was that before the bloody Gwangju uprising against military rule in South Korea and in support of democratization, activists had night schools similar to the MDC DSA Socialist Night School.”

The January 2020 Washington Socialist will be published Friday, Jan. 3 with an article deadline of Dec. 28.

We're going to be marching in the Silver Spring Thanksgiving Parade! We'll hear from a panel of local organizers fighting for immigration justice, we will have small group breakout sessions to explore the connections between climate justice and justice for immigrants, and we will discuss how we can all work together to show mutual aid and solidarity when we're in the streets with comrades who may experience more risks while engaging in direct action.

Hosted by DMV De-escalation Collective at Luther Place Memorial Church, 1226 Vermont Ave, NW (Thomas Circle). This public de-escalation training is open to everyone! De-escalation skills equip us to identify and interrupt potentially harmful situations. We aim to create moments of pause in which people can make choices about their own safety. We also provide resources (emotional support, companionship, money, food, etc) that increase access to safety, especially for marginalized people. “Calming people down” and ending conflicts is part of this work, but not all of it!
