Friend,

At a school, at a party, and outside a mall. Another week of tragic gun violence in America. There were shootings in California (in Santa Clarita and Fresno) and Duncan, Oklahoma -- and those are only the stories that occupied the media’s attention long enough for us to notice.

The attacks in El Paso and Midland were barely a few months ago. And as we work to heal from recent incidents of gun violence in our own communities in Texas, it is clear that Texas Republicans -- obsessed with their own re-election and susceptible to pressure from the NRA and the gun lobby -- have allowed mass shootings to become a national epidemic.

Part of the reason I have refused to take PAC money in this campaign is that we have to end the corrupting influence of the NRA and the gun lobby. And I renew my pledge to fight the gun violence epidemic here in Texas, and in Congress.

Last week, The Texas Tribune released a comprehensive ten-year study of mass shootings in our state. Unsurprisingly, it showed that gun violence has continued to worsen as state legislators have weakened our gun laws.

Of all gun-related bills the legislature has passed in the last decade, only one did not weaken gun safety.

It should not take another tragedy in El Paso or Sutherland Springs to spur us to act. And we know that raising the standards of gun ownership in this country, through extensive background checks and Extreme Risk Protection Orders, will significantly reduce the likelihood of gun violence.

Working to end gun violence means having the courage to take on the gun lobby -- courage that Roger Williams hasn’t shown. I believe that the gun lobby must be held accountable for decades of illegal behavior and misguided policies intended to protect themselves while our communities are devastated and families are torn apart.

People-powered campaigns like this one demonstrate that candidates don't need PAC contributions to take on entrenched interests like the NRA. That's why your support matters so much. Our PAC-free, pro-gun safety campaign can't run without your contributions -- can you rush a donation today?

By being a part of our team, you're speaking out for the following critical policies:

-Requiring universal background checks and universal licensing requirements at all points of purchase, including the requirement that all gun show sales and all internet gun sales require a background check.
-Creating strong red flag laws and Extreme Risk Protection Orders to disarm abusers and those proven to be a harm to themselves or others.
-Banning the civilian sale of assault weapons, high-capacity magazines, and other weapons of war, designed to kill the most people, the most efficiently.
-Repealing the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act for both gun manufacturers and gun retailers.
-Opposing concealed carry reciprocity.
-Ensuring that the FBI and DOJ prioritize right-wing and white supremacist violence.

I’m grateful to you for being with us in this fight. And as we continue to talk and listen to people all over TX-25 about our shared vision, our campaign needs to continue expanding the electorate and reaching everyone it possibly can.

Please chip in today to support our movement to advance progressive gun safety legislation and hold the gun lobby accountable: [link removed]

Thank you again for being in this fight with us. We’re grateful,

Julie
