Spring has sprung, and that means it’s time to get outside and enjoy some sun with the family. But with that warmer weather comes the unexpected: spring showers, muddy trails, and flooded creeks. The right footwear can get you through the toughest terrain with your feet intact. There’s a boot or shoe for every conceivable adventure and weather pattern. Choose wisely and you can focus less on the mud and more on making memories. |

3 Games to Make Hiking with Kids More Fun Hiking with the kids is a great way to introduce them to the outdoors and get the wiggles out. These games will help keep them engaged and add some fun twists to a walk in the woods.
1. Find Five
Find Five, which comes to us courtesy of Shanti Hodges, the founder of Hike It Baby, is a variation of “I Spy” for the trail. Ask the kids to find, say, five different shades of green or five different birds. With younger kids, Hodges emphasizes recognizing the differences among the natural objects they’re seeing. “They don’t need to name the birds, just count them,” says Hodges. “You’re just using nature as a landscape and having kids pick it out.”
2. Follow The Map
Follow the Map is a great way to neutralize the inevitable “are we there yet” questions. This one requires planning ahead but is well-worth the effort in trail-side fun. You’ll need paper and pencils or crayons. Draw a map of the trail for the day’s hike. It doesn’t have to be real. In fact, the more imaginative and creative the better, says Hodges. Then point out trail features along the way and match them to the predrawn map.
3. Freeze Game
This is a reversal of freeze tag: tell the group to run ahead and then yell freeze. “So you say, ‘run, run, run, freeze!’ And they all freeze in a statue,” says Hodges. You can also give the kids a specific shape, such as a tree, to depict when they freeze. They just have to stay frozen until you reach them. If the kids are a little older, they can take turns being in charge of telling the group to run/freeze.
Here are a few more games to play with your kid when you’re hiking.

Active rest may sound contradictory, but some light activity on off days can speed up your recovery. Two Stretches You Should Definitely Know How to Do
1. Piriformis Muscle Stretch
Lie on your back with both feet flat on the floor and both knees bent. Pull the right knee up to the chest, grasp the knee with the left hand and pull it towards the left shoulder and hold the stretch. Repeat for each side.
2. Hand-Behind-Head Pec Stretch
Lie on your back with your palms supporting your skull. Take a deep breath and move your elbows towards the floor, expanding your chest. Hold for 5 to 10 seconds. Repeat 15 times. Alternatively, perform this stretch while standing with your back against a wall.
See the rest of the stretches here.
