Ward 3 Update: Tree Protection, Summer Camps, and More

Dear Neighbors,

I am very pleased to report that the [1]Urban Forest Preservation Stop Work
Order Authority Emergency Amendment Act took effect last week, on Monday,
March 28th. This critical legislation authorizes the Mayor to issue stop
work orders to preserve Special Trees and Heritage Trees. Special trees
have a diameter of 44 to 100 inches, and heritage trees have a diameter of
100 inches or more.

The emergency legislation expires on June 26th, so it is key that the
permanent legislation that I introduced with Councilmember Allen, the
[2]Urban Forest Preservation Authority Amendment Act of 2021, is passed
before then. This legislation also integrates considerations of tree
protection into the permitting pipeline, allows the Mayor to revoke the
permit under which a violation of the law occurrs, and requires the
District government to comply with the same laws as private actors. My
committee marked up that permanent bill today, and it will now come before
the full Council. I am hopeful that bill will complete Council review by
early summer.

Trees, particularly the heritage and special trees that are the oldest,
make the District a more beautiful and healthier place to live, and it's
important we do all that we can to protect them.

Regards,

Mary

Apply for DMPED's Neighborhood Prosperity Fund!

The Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development (DMPED) invites the
submission of proposals for the Neighborhood Prosperity Fund (NPF). DMPED
will award up to a maximum of $4 million in FY22 to grantees under this
program.

The NPF incentivizes community development, economic growth, and job
creation by leveraging local funds to provide financing for projects that
attract private investment to distressed communities. Grant funds support
architectural and engineering costs, construction costs, tenant
improvements, historical preservation building improvements to maintain
compliance with applicable laws, development analysis, rent abatement
and/or tenant concessions for up to 3 years to stabilize market rent.

The deadline to apply is Friday, April 8th, at 4pm. For more information,
visit [9]DMPED's website.
