Foreign Affairs Minister to attend G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

The Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today announced that he will attend the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Nagoya, Japan, from November 22–23, 2019.

At the G20 meeting, the Minister will participate in discussions related to free trade and global governance, the Sustainable Development Goals, and support for Africa. He will also take the opportunity to engage with his counterparts to advance Canadian interests.

The Minister will also participate in the Ministerial Meeting of the Non-Proliferation and Disarmament Initiative (NPDI) to demonstrate strong support for the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), a key part of the rules-based international order.

Japan holds the G20 presidency in 2019 under the theme Ensure Global Sustainable Development. This meeting will be the final one under the Japanese G20 presidency before Saudi Arabia assumes the G20 presidency on December 1, 2019.
Canada was instrumental in launching the G20 finance ministers and central bank governors’ process in 1999 in the wake of the Asian financial crisis. Building on the format of the G20 finance ministers’ meetings, former Prime Minister Paul Martin was one of the first to campaign for a formal G20 leaders forum.
In response to the global financial crisis in 2008, the G20 was elevated to include heads of state and government. Today, the G20 is the premier forum for international economic cooperation.
G20 members are the world's major economies, representing all inhabited continents, 85% of global economic output, two-thirds of the world's population, and 75% of international trade.
Launched in 2010, the NPDI is a cross-regional coalition of 12 non-nuclear weapon states that are parties to the NPT. Members are: Australia, Canada, Chile, Germany, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, Nigeria, the Philippines, Poland, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates.
