Register now for the 2022 Pro Ecclesia Conference

We have all been influenced by important figures in the Christian tradition, some of them our teachers through the years, and others who were important figures in past times. An interesting question can be: What did these figures who influenced us so positively get wrong, in the light of what they got right?

The annual Pro Ecclesia Conference - June 6-8, 2022, at Loyola University in Baltimore - has asked an ecumenical group of scholars to address particular figures and speak on that question. All these scholars view the Christian tradition as a gift to us and as normative for our thinking and practice, yet they know that our great teachers are not beyond criticism.

Confirmed speakers for the conference include:

Frederick Bauerschmidt, Loyola University Maryland
“The Dumb Ox in the Room: Reckoning with Aquinas’s Legacy”

Phillip Cary, Eastern University
“Not Quite What Any of Us Want Him to Be: On Augustine”

Carolyn Chau, King’s University College at Western University
“Between Form and Norm: Assessing the Evangelizing Potential of Balthasar's Theology”

David Luy, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School
“The Place of Christology in Dogmatic Theology: A Critical Engagement with
    Wolfhart Pannenberg”

Charles Raith, Ascension Health
"How My Mind Changed on Infant Baptism”

Amy Schifrin, North American Lutheran Seminary/Trinity School for Ministry
    “On Luther”

Registration for the 2022 Pro Ecclesia conference is $225, with a reduced rate for retired clergy, seniors, and full-time students of $175.

The conference begins Monday evening and concludes by lunch time on Wednesday.

Dorm rooms are available on the Loyola University campus. Each room is part of a four-room suite, sharing two bathrooms, a common area, and a kitchenette. Cost is $75 single and $70 double per person per night. Because of COVID restrictions, Loyola permits only married couples to share a room at this time. You may reserve a room for one or two nights.

Registration closes May 23. We cannot guarantee space or dormitory accommodations after that date.

A high point of the conference was always our annual banquet on Tuesday night, but under current restrictions in the city of Baltimore, that is not permitted. We hope this will change, and if it does donations will be requested to defray the cost.

Loyola requires all attendees to have been fully vaccinated, with booster, for COVID. You should be prepared to show proof of vaccination. At this point masking is also required on campus.

The Pro Ecclesia Conferences are sponsored by the Center for Catholic and Evangelical Theology, founded by Carl Braaten and Robert Jenson in 1991. The annual conferences intentionally feature ecumenical scholars from the various Christian traditions and are targeted for parish clergy as well as for scholars and active lay Christians.
