Fatherly

Mistakes. Missteps. Failures. They happen to us all, and they’re important to learn from. But the high-stakes world of parenthood makes them feel larger, more profound. It’s not uncommon to hang on to them, to have them live in the back of your head and even guide your decisions. They may even make you more hesitant or cause you to step back from certain areas altogether. That’s not helpful for you or your family. What is? Learning how to forgive yourself. Not only is this important for personal growth but doing it in plain view also teaches your children how to be vulnerable, how to accept and move on, how to not be overly critical. All powerful lessons.

TIPS AND TRICKS

A Trick to Tame Your Negative Thoughts
It can feel counterintuitive to show yourself the same compassion you show others. But it's crucial to learn how to extend yourself some grace.

If you’re feeling down on yourself, the jump from self-deprecating thoughts to congratulatory ones might feel too big (and unrealistic). That’s why California-based therapist Kailey Hockridge’s suggests a simple self-compassion exercise that centers around neutrality. If you catch a negative or self-critical thought in your head, rather than trying to do a total 180 by giving yourself compliments (often a useless task) just try neutralizing the negative language. For example, rather than saying “I’m an awful dad,” try “I’m just a dad.” It might not feel like a big shift, but with a bit of practice, you might find yourself better able to accept that you’re human, just like everyone else.

Here are a few more ways to put a cork in your inner critic.
