A great thing happened in Pepperell Monday night.

Norman “Joe” Radwich, who had identified as an unenrolled candidate up until a week ago, was elected to the Pepperell Board of Selectmen.

To explain why this should matter to you, let’s go back to last Monday, Nov. 11.

Joe, a longtime Pepperell resident and small business owner who happened to be registered as unenrolled, reached out to the Massachusetts Republican Party for 11th hour help in his bid to win a special election. He had never before run for public office. We advised Mr. Radwich to join us and register as a Republican. The very next day, that’s exactly what he did, and the MassGOP quickly pitched in with a last-minute canvassing effort, assisted in no small part by the recently-revived UMass-Lowell College Republicans.

Fast-forward to Monday night, and there was Joe, celebrating his Election Day victory with family and friends, having bested his Democratic opponent by about 100 votes.

We got involved because we believed in Joe, and Joe reached out because he believed in us. We are growing this party one registered Republican at a time.

Joe Radwich’s story is special to us because it shows people that the Massachusetts Republican Party is committed to winning races of all sizes. This story is special because it sends the message that you can register as a Republican and win in Massachusetts.

Lastly, it is special to me because the significance of this accomplishment was twofold -- not only did we register a new Republican voter, we helped him cross the finish line and win an important local election.
