New Report: Use Of The Multi-Sectoral Approach To Ending Gender-Based Violence And Female Genital Mutilation In Africa

Equality Now, in partnership with UNFPA, seeks to strengthen the multi-sectoral approach (MSA) towards ensuring enforcement of global and regional accountability mechanisms on ending FGM, both at a national and regional level. This work is carried out, within the framework of the Spotlight Initiative Africa regional programme, and Phase III of the UNFPA-UNICEF Joint Programme on the Elimination of FGM.

MacKenzie Scott And Dan Jewett Award Equality Now $15 Million Gift To Advance Women’s And Girls’ Rights

“We are overjoyed and humbled by this gift. It will have a transformative impact on Equality Now’s ability to address gender discrimination by holding governments to account for enacting and enforcing laws and policies that end legal inequality, sexual violence and exploitation, and harmful practices like child marriage and female genital mutilation,” said Yasmeen Hassan, Equality Now’s Global Executive Director.

Human Rights Court To Hear Groundbreaking Case On Sexual Violence In Bolivia

On March 29th-30th, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACtHR) will hear the case Brisa De Angulo Losada v. Bolivia. The case alleges that Bolivia violated the rights of Brisa De Angulo by effectively denying her justice after she was repeatedly raped by an adult family member in 2002 in Bolivia. This is the first time that the IACtHR will hear a case pertaining to the human rights violations of an adolescent victim of incest.

In February, we were in Sierra Leone engaging state and non-state actors on enacting a comprehensive anti-FGM law that would criminalize FGM for all ages in order to accelerate the elimination of this harmful practice.

Equality Now And NIHOL Are Joining Forces To Promote Gender Equality In Uzbekistan

Despite recent action to improve gender equality in Uzbekistan, there is still far to go. As in most post-Soviet countries, the country’s legislation on sexual violence in Uzbekistan falls below international human rights standards. That’s the reason why we’ve partnered with NIHOL Initiative’s Development and Supporting Center on a three-year project funded by the European Union.
