As the end of this year approaches, we know you are busy but can you take just a few minutes to fill out this survey to help us assess where IEN, as a member of It Takes Roots, may want to proceed in relation to electoral organizing in the coming year? We are asking Indigenous and frontline organizers and organizational leadership to provide us with this valuable feedback.
Right now, amidst the global right wing backlash and opportunities here in the US to challenge the traditional Democratic party's agenda, we see the upcoming 2020 elections inside the US and the mass mobilizations taking place, as a critical moment for us to assess our movement’s impact and role.
As an alignment of the left grassroots organizing sector, and as ITR members and leaders, we are asking ourselves what is our role and responsibility at this historical moment in fighting the rise of authoritarian and neoliberal power and what our impact may be on the issues we currently work on and that our communities care about. How will we contend for governing influence and ensure a just and equitable transformation in the long term?
This survey begins the process of exploring some of these questions and is also one of the first steps in an effort to assess, pivot, and move (be nimble) together, as we respond to the needs of our Indigenous and frontline communities.
This survey is also a critical step on the road to the May ITR convening and will help clarify what our collective work may include moving into 2020.
Here are some questions we hope you’ll consider as you fill out this survey:
- To what depth and scope are you engaging in the 2020 election cycle?
- Are you involved in local, state, or national electoral organizing work?
- How do you see electoral organizing within a long term strategy?
- Do you see a need for national alliances such as ITR to engage in the 2020 election ecosystem?
- How should ITR members be preparing ourselves for the different outcomes of the election and its implication on our work (i.e. having to respond to rapid response because more barriers against advancing alternatives with our people under attack)? A Trump win? A corporate Democrat (Biden, Harris) win? A left to progressive leaning Democrat win (Warren/Sanders)?
- Should we be organizing to contend for governing power? Other forms of power?
Thank you, we appreciate your time to share your important insight with us!
