I flew into my local airport in Arkansas last night after spending the weekend in Washington D.C. at the Brand New Congress Summit for our 2020 candidates. I was at our organization’s first Summit in 2017 as a congressional candidate. This time, my role and responsibilities were different, but my belief in what we’re trying to accomplish at BNC has only grown.
We held the Summit to provide candidates with policy training, strategy sessions, and team building. It was an inspirational couple of days. Here are three of my immediate takeaways:
Our candidates bring so much love and power to their campaigns. Throughout the candidate recruitment process, I’ve had the privilege of getting to know our candidates and hearing their stories. However, many of them didn’t know each other that well. We started the Summit with 2-minute stump speeches so that candidates could better introduce themselves to one another. Their backstories, motivations for running, and passion were so moving. They cheered for one another. They hugged one another. Some cried.
BNC’s strategy to build a slate of candidates running together is truly unique. Brand New Congress isn’t just an endorsing agency. We’re committed to building a team of candidates who know, support, and help each other. Several times during the Summit, I noticed candidates from various parts of the country huddled around tables, comparing notes about their campaigns and strategizing together. Those huddles of candidates are precisely what BNC has been working toward. I don’t believe any organization around the country brings candidates together quite like we do.
We can’t do this without you. At the Summit, we talked about policy that puts the needs of people like you first. We discussed strategy that empowers you as a grassroots supporter. You are the reason these candidates are running. And you are the reason BNC exists to support them.
Thank you for nominating these amazing candidates. Thank you for following them on social media. Thank you for supporting their campaigns. And thank you, too, for supporting Brand New Congress.
Even though we’ll have a few more great candidates to tell you about, we are now transitioning from the season of candidate recruitment to the season of candidate support. We’ve got a lot of great plans for the coming months that will help get a Brand New Congress elected.
