Dear John,

The cost of living has increased significantly since the worst of the pandemic, largely driven by rising energy costs. I know this is of huge concern to households across the Borders, as well as businesses.

This is a global issue, made worse by Putin's barbaric war in Ukraine. There will need to be a global response, but for now the UK Government is cutting taxes and helping with energy bills to help ease the financial difficulties people are facing.

Please take a look below at some of the announcements from yesterday's Spring Statement, as well as the support the UK is giving to Ukraine to help them through this dreadful situation.

Kind regards.

Yours sincerely,

John
A raft of measures were introduced yesterday by the Chancellor to help ease the cost of living.

💷 The National Insurance threshold will increase, giving a tax cut of £330 to 30 million workers across the UK – the biggest tax cut in a decade

⛽ Fuel duty has been cut by 5p per litre for 12 months – the biggest ever reduction in fuel duty

✂️ From 2024, the basic rate of income tax will be cut to 19p for the first time in 16 years, delivering a £5bn tax cut for workers, families and many businesses. The UK Government will give Scotland £350m to implement this here, and the Scottish Government must now commit to cutting this for people in Scotland too
The UK is standing right behind Ukraine in their fight against Russia. Just today the Prime Minister has announced an extra £25m in support.
UK forces having been training the Ukrainian military since 2015, and we have been supplying anti tank missiles in their thousands which have been used to great effect.
We have also sanctioned over a thousand individuals and entities, helping to tighten the squeeze on Putin, his inner circle, and the Russian economy.
Furthermore, we are providing refuge to Ukrainians in their thousands through schemes like Homes for Ukraine.
