It’s hard to believe that the Affordable Care Act was signed into law 12 years ago already! To this day, I still consider this time spent working with colleagues to draft and pass the ACA to be one of the most foundational experiences of my career.

Long before joining the Fairness Project team, I got my start on Capitol Hill. I worked under a number of influential changemakers, but it was under Rep. Allyson Schwartz that I had this opportunity. Congresswoman Schwartz was a health care advocate through and through. Largely because of her roots — she represented the greater Philadelphia area, a district made up of hospitals, academic medicine, and so much more.

It was during my time working with her, the rest of the Ways & Means Committee, and their congressional staffers that I learned so little of what we do is about politics, and so much more of it is about diplomacy. Working with so many people who had their designated areas of expertise to put together a package that had to be so comprehensive that every single American would benefit from it was a truly formative experience.

The perspective I gained here has helped shape my time with the Fairness Project. We’re living at a time when our politics are the most divided they may have ever been, and too many politicians care more now about what party they represent than making a difference in the lives of their constituents.

Our team has won real change 23 times over because when we decide to run a campaign, we do so comprehensively — we make sure that no matter your party or your ideals, you benefit from this policy.

It’s why we’ve won campaigns to raise wages, guarantee paid leave, enact policing reforms, and more in red, purple, and blue states across the country — because Americans everywhere agree with common-sense reforms that improve our lives.
