We did it!

Yesterday, Governor Newsom signed SB 245, the Abortion Accessibility Act. This is something to celebrate, because this legislation removes cost-sharing requirements, like copayments and deductibles, for abortion care—bringing us one step closer to ensuring that no one in California is unable to access care because of the cost of the service.

Passing SB 245 is just the beginning. Today, NARAL Pro-Choice California joined our fellow California Future of Abortion Council steering committee members to announce a legislative package of 13 bills that will protect and expand access to abortion care, preparing the state to serve Californians and absorb the increase in out-of-state patients forced to seek care here should extreme abortion bans be enforced in their home state.

Now, more than ever, we need state laws that protect our fundamental freedoms. The anti-choice supermajority on the U.S. Supreme Court is preparing to hand down a decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization —a case regarding Mississippi’s 15-week abortion ban that directly challenges Roe v. Wade. In anticipation of this decision, anti-choice lawmakers around the country are working overtime to restrict abortion access.

California has led the country in protecting abortion access for its residents. Now, with the passage of the Abortion Accessibility Act, our lawmakers are expanding it even further by making sure everyone can access affordable reproductive healthcare.

Every body should have the freedom to decide if, when, and how to raise a family, regardless of how much money they have.
