Dear friend,

On February 24, Russia and President Vladimir Putin launched a full-scale military invasion on the sovereign nation of Ukraine.

In the following weeks, this baseless and unprovoked act of war has created a humanitarian crisis for the Ukrainian people, forcing millions to stay in their homes and defend their country. Countless others — primarily women and children — have had to leave their country, their families, and their lives behind as they make the dangerous journey to asylum.

The Russian occupation of Ukraine has the potential to be the most devastating invasion in Europe since World War II. Vladmir Putin has acted without any consideration for loss of life, the refugee crisis, or the impending threat to international stability, leaving millions of Ukrainians without a home and in search of safety.

The weight of these attacks on Ukraine is felt throughout the commonwealth.

Pennsylvania is home to the second largest Ukrainian-American population in the U.S., and Pittsburgh is a sister city to the people of Donetsk, Ukraine. These atrocities are happening to the people in our own communities, and as such, we have a responsibility to step up and do everything we can to help our Ukrainian neighbors.

That’s why I’m introducing legislation that would allocate $2 million dollars in state funding to provide assistance for Ukrainian refugees who come to Pennsylvania.

These state funds will allow us to support any Ukrainian, regardless of legal status, for as long as necessary. This funding will also help our communities provide for more immediate needs, like short-term housing.

I won’t stop championing this legislation until we deliver Ukrainian refugees the help and resources they need to feel at home in our commonwealth.

My heart is with Ukrainians as they continue fighting for their independence, for democracy, and for peace. I hope for a swift resolution to this crisis without further escalation.

In solidarity with the brave people of Ukraine,

Senator Lindsey Williams
