John ,
Like most people, I want nothing more than to see an end to Putin’s war against Ukraine. I want nothing more than to see Russian jets targeting civilians being bombed out of the sky. I want nothing more than to see Putin's troops retreating like cowards back across their border …
… but equally as much, I do NOT want to see New York, Los Angeles, Anchorage, Seattle, or any other American city targeted and bombed, and that is the risk we’re talking about when we discuss imposing a no-fly zone.
Enacting a no-fly zone would make it likely that the U.S. military will be forced to fire upon Russian jets, and that would be a direct declaration of war with Russia – a nation with a massive nuclear arsenal whose leader has already threatened to deploy them and has the means to do so.
“Close the sky” isn’t just a pro-Ukrainian slogan or hashtag – it’s a serious request that, if granted, could drastically alter the future of our world, and not for the better.
We must do what we can to keep this situation from escalating, and I believe that getting directly involved would only increase Ukrainian suffering right now.
Don’t get me wrong, I understand where President Zelenskyy is coming from, and if I were him, I would be doing and saying the same exact thing.
President Zelenskyy is trying to save his country. But America has a responsibility to the whole world.
Having said that, let's discuss what we can do to help Ukraine militarily right now.
For one thing, our military can provide them with more air-defense weaponry to take down Russian jets, helicopters, and most importantly, drones.
For the record, as of today, most Russian jets have been grounded thanks to the excellent job the Ukrainian army is doing shooting them down. Meanwhile, our NATO partners in Turkey have provided Ukraine with anti-drone weaponry that is working really well to shoot down Russian drones.
This in and of itself is a huge blow to Putin, not just because his drones are getting shot down, but because Turkey was a nation that he thought he could win over to his side. Putin is losing his grip – not just on this war, but on everything he thought he had under his control.
Tens of thousands of Russian citizens in dozens of cities are risking their lives to take to the streets and say, “NO WAR WITH UKRAINE!” Believe me, soon there will be millions of Russian citizens taking to the streets, and just like during the Arab Spring, the chants will go from “No War To Ukraine” to “NO MORE PUTIN!”
When that happens, it's game over for Vladimir.
I know this is not comforting for President Zelenskyy and the people of Ukraine right now, but I also know that war is hell, and escalating this conflict into a third World War won’t be in anyone's best interest – especially because our quarrel is not with Russia and its citizens, it’s with Putin and his oligarchs.
I am worried about the rising noise levels on the Right in this country suggesting we send more of our own troops to Europe. This is how wars start, folks – they start with propaganda and the beating of the war drums. This is how the Iraq war started.
The worst part is, these wars are almost always started behind the scenes by wealthy men for profit motives, then sold to the poor and middle-class who will fight and die for them with lies and propaganda.
Make no mistake – there are very powerful, very wealthy individuals in this country and around the world who stand to make tens of trillions of dollars if the U.S. gets involved in a direct military conflict with Russia. But that’s not all they care about – to be honest, they already have so much money, it's not even purely about profit anymore … it’s also about power.
These are the folks we’re really fighting, and they happen to be the people bankrolling the GOP.
I’d be lying if I say I don't fear their capabilities. I have seen how effective they are firsthand. I myself was deployed to Iraq under false pretenses by these men and their political puppets. I fought in that war, took their orders, and did what I was told, because that's what you do when you are a soldier.
I don't regret my time in the military, but I do regret that senseless war, and I only wish there had been more people speaking out back then, just like I am today, to urge “NO WAR.”
The hypocrisy on the right is nauseating – they stand and cheer for President Zelenskyy and then go and hold secret meetings with Putin and his cronies. You think it's a coincidence that not a single Trump official or Republican made it to Putin's sanction list? I tweeted out the other day that I want in on that list – the way I see it, it’s a badge of honor.
There’s a lot we can do here at home to prevent this war from escalating and to damage Putin’s ambitions of hurting our country.
First, we must weaken the GOP’s influence here in the U.S. – especially the Putin wing of the party. At the same time, we need to take our country back from the military-industrial complex. The latter is a bit more complicated, but achieving the former will go a long way toward achieving our goal.
I am going to keep on fighting, and I am going to keep asking you to help me do it.
