Every once in a while, we like to go back to basics and remind you all – and ourselves – why we started No Dem Left Behind in the first place.

You see, we were sick and tired of watching the Democratic Party cede more and more rural ground to the Radical Right simply because some bean-counter with a spreadsheet said it was “more efficient” for Democrats to spend campaign resources in cities and close-in suburbs because “that’s where Democrats live.”

Some of us are old enough to remember an America where hardworking rural folks were almost synonymous with the labor movement and yes, Democrats.  An America with strong rural Democratic leaders like Sam Rayburn, Lyndon B. Johnson, Tom Daschle, Harry Reid, Robert Byrd, Claire McCaskill, Dick Gephardt, Tom Harkin, Blanche Lincoln, and many more.

We here at No Dem Left Behind strongly believe it’s time for Democrats to return to our rural roots and let folks in “flyover country” know that they’re just as important to us urban and suburban voters.

Look, we Democrats are supposed to be the party of the working people, and the fact is, nobody works harder than people trying to get by in today’s rural America.

Whether it’s the farmer trying to keep her family’s little patch of land from being subsumed or destroyed by corporate ag, the construction worker who drives two hours each way to the nearest boomtown for work each day because that’s where the jobs are, the middle-aged man working at Walmart because that’s all that was left in town after the factory closed, or the small business owner who worries herself to sleep at night about her shrinking customer base and her bottom line, these people wake up each day and take on challenges that could crush anybody.

These folks deserve for Democrats to have their backs … and they deserve for us to offer them a vision of hope and progress as an alternative to the relentless fear- and anger-based narrative of the Radical Right.

No Dem Left Behind has a plan to make that happen, but we can’t do it without your help.
