Friends and supporters:

I was just with President Biden as he signed my bipartisan Dr. Lorna Breen Health Care Provider Protection Act into law. This legislation is incredibly close to my heart because it works to reduce and prevent suicide, burnout, and mental and behavioral health conditions among health care professionals.

The bill was named in honor of Dr. Lorna Breen, a physician from Charlottesville, Virginia who was working on the front lines of the pandemic in New York and died by suicide in the spring of 2020. Today I want to thank Lorna’s family for all of their advocacy on this issue; it’s with their support that we’ve been able to make this meaningful progress.

As we began to navigate the COVID-19 pandemic, it was quickly clear that its mental health consequences are particularly acute for frontline health care healers, who’ve made tremendous sacrifices to care for their patients in uncharted times. It’s with this in mind that my health care policy advisors and I have been working on this legislation and urging my colleagues in Congress to prioritize it.

This bill is a critical first step to provide our healers with mental health resources to cope with the challenges they face every day -- and supporting our health care workforce will benefit everyone, because we all need great medical professionals to take care of us and our loved ones.

By keeping our health care professionals healthy, everyone in society wins -- so I hope you’ll join me in taking a moment today to acknowledge this victory.

Thanks for everything you do to support this important work, from reading these emails, to donating when you can, to volunteering in your neighborhood. It does make a difference.
