Friends,

I’ve been fighting for DC statehood for 15 years - first working for Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton and now as a DC Councilmember. Achieving statehood is not a goal I take lightly.
It’s not right and it’s not fair, but anytime the conversation of statehood comes up, Republicans love to bring up scandals and mismanagement in DC government. No other state has to prove itself worthy of basic democratic rights, but that’s the unfortunate reality of our situation.

This week alone we’ve seen these headlines:
A $392 Million Mistake Just Scrambled Bowser’s Budget Rollout (Alex Koma, Washington City Paper)
Former Bowser Ally Raises Concerns About Main Streets’ Financial Management (Alex Koma, Washington City Paper)
Even with Public Financing, City Contractors Line Up to Kick in Campaign Cash for Bowser (Alex Koma, Washington City Paper)

These stories paint a picture of a city in disarray and mired in cronyism. We can’t keep giving the Republicans material for their bad faith attacks. We need to make the strongest case possible for statehood and that includes demonstrating ethical, effective government. It’s time we become the 51st state - but we first need new leadership. Can you help us get there by chipping in $51 today: [link removed]

My best,
Robert
