Over the weekend, I participated on two panels at SXSW to discuss gun violence and the need to amplify youth voices. It was an important discussion that I was proud to be a part of. 

I was joined by Gary Cunningham, President and CEO of Prosperity Now, to discuss the link between the racial wealth divide in America and the disproportionate impact of gun violence on Black Americans. I talked about my own experiences and how my generation has inherited the failures of the past 40 years of policing in America as a response to gun violence.

I also talked about the urgent need for action. Real action that doesn’t continue the cycle of mass policing and incarceration, but instead tackles the root causes of gun violence. John this is what March For Our Lives is working towards and why this work is so important. Can you help fuel our movement by contributing $3 or more?

I then spoke about some of our work and the power of social media in protest and movement building. We discussed how important it is that we continue to amplify the voices of young people and those most impacted by gun violence, and how powerful it is to organize large-scale actions and demonstrations to combat gun violence and hold our elected officials accountable. 

John, I’m so glad I was able to talk about our work at SXSW and the urgent need to tackle gun violence as a public health crisis. Next week will be the four-year anniversary of the March For Our Lives on Washington, DC and the 800 sister marches across the world. We’ve made a lot of progress since then, but we still have so much more we need to accomplish to end gun violence. We hope you’ll be a part of what we do next.
