CMPD Reports Gun Seizures on the Rise

Violent attacks involving guns are up 10% this year in Charlotte from 2021. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department have reported a major increase in gun seizures – nearly 500 guns seized this year, a 14% increase compared to this time last year.

Our police officers and detectives are working tirelessly to get guns used in crimes out of the hands of dangerous individuals.

The Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department cited a few examples of investigations leading to firearms being seized:

On February 1, a school resource officer was advised of students posing with guns on Instagram. The officer discovered several of the guns were BB guns, but that one was real. The officer tracked down the individual with the real gun who is a juvenile at another school. The officer responded to the suspect’s resident and got permission to search for a weapon. With help from the family, he found the handgun.

On February 15, officers responded to a domestic violence call for service. A suspect had pointed a gun at other people in the residence. Officers successfully de-escalated a barricade situation with the suspect and took him into custody. Two guns were seized including one stolen gun, along with a trafficking amount of heroin.

Responsible gun-ownership and safety are critical:

  • Properly secure all firearms inaccessible to children
  • Be sure the firearm is locked and unloaded.
  • Do not leave firearms in motor vehicles, especially if unlocked!

Anyone with information on a gun-related crime should contact Crime Stoppers at http://charlottecrimestoppers.com/ or 704-334-1600.
Community tips are critical to help solve cases and hold offenders responsible. It takes all of us to create a safe community.

I ask for your support and vote in the primary election on May 17. Early voting begins April 28.
