Hi there,
Almost 10 years ago, I stood on the floor of the Senate chamber in the Texas state capitol to filibuster a disastrous piece of legislation that would have devastated reproductive healthcare in the state of Texas.
For more than 13 hours I stood. And while at times it was painful, I knew the discomfort I felt in that moment paled in comparison to the struggle people across the state would feel if this bill passed into law. The bill set unattainable and unnecessary physical standards for clinics to meet. In the second-largest state in the country, that would mean closing 37 out of 42 clinics.
We stopped that bill temporarily, and when it ultimately did pass we didn’t stop fighting — successfully overturning it in the Supreme Court three years later.
But that was then. Today, we continue to see an assault on reproductive rights in Texas and elsewhere around the country. And we’ve lost the protection the Supreme Court once afforded us, with many court watchers predicting that Roe v. Wade will be overturned in June of this year.
But friend, we still have a real chance to codify reproductive rights and protect healthcare for years to come.
The Fairness Project’s newest campaign, Michigan for Reproductive Freedom is a groundbreaking ballot measure — the first of its kind — and could set the stage to codify Roe v. Wade’s protections in states all across the country.
But to win this campaign, they need our help. Will you make a donation of $10, $25, or whatever you can afford right now to supercharge their efforts in Michigan?
In the world we’re living in, codifying reproductive rights might feel unachievable. But friend, I know the Fairness Project and their partners in Michigan can do it.
They’ve won 23 campaigns to raise wages, expand health care, enact police reform, and guarantee paid leave in red, purple, and blue states — because Americans everywhere agree with common-sense reforms that improve our lives.
So, friend, will you join me today in supporting the Fairness Project as they fight to win this groundbreaking initiative and set the stage for a new way to save reproductive health care in this country?
