We are youth Movement Organizers with March For Our Lives in Michigan, and a couple weeks ago we went to meet with state lawmakers to discuss gun violence prevention legislation and mental health resources in schools. I want to tell you about it and why it’s so important that we continue this work, but first I’m going to ask you if you can contribute just $3 to help fuel our youth-led movement.

Over 50 student advocates joined us at the Michigan Capitol steps for a press conference so that our message was loud and clear – we need critical gun-safety legislation passed now. We also met individually with 14 Michigan lawmakers and Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s Senior Policy Advisor to discuss gun violence prevention.

We are advocating for our state lawmakers to pass Secure Firearm Storage legislation, which would require gun owners to lock up their firearms so that they are not easily accessible. We are also pushing for more mental health resources in schools, so that at least one mental health professional is available in every school. Friend, this is common-sense gun safety legislation that should not be up for debate.

We won’t stop lobbying our state lawmakers until they take gun violence prevention seriously, and I hope you’ll continue supporting our youth-led organizing by chipping in $3 or more.

We shouldn’t be afraid to go to school or have active shooter drills in case of school shootings, but this is the reality for students all across the country. We should be able to feel safe while we’re getting an education, and all of our state legislators can help make that happen by passing critical gun-safety legislation and improving mental health resources in schools. No matter what state we’re in, we’ll keep holding our lawmakers accountable until they do.
